About the Process
Atlantis has designed a software system known as VAD™. VAD allows our technicians to design abutments with a certainty and precision previously unknown to implant dentistry.
The following is an overview of the Atlantis VAD and titanium machining process. The same process is followed by our technicians for single and multiple unit cases. The Atlantis Abutment in Zirconia is also fabricated using similar steps.
Step 1: Scan Diagnostic Model
Computerized image of the diagnostic model. A virtual tooth is created to fill the space to facilliate top-down treatment planning.
Step 2: Scan Master Cast
Computerized image of the master cast. Computer accurately captures the implant location, orientation, angle and depth.
Step 3: Determine the Ideal Shape
VAD software allows Atlantis Abutment Design Technicians to design abutments with a natural tooth shape, that compensates for offset or angled fixture placement and maximize retention.
Step 4: Design Virtual Abutment
Complete abutment design is perfected through VAD prior to initiating the machining process.
Step 5: Virtual Inspection
Each abutment is inspected against the customer's preferences prior to machining.
Step 6: Machine Titanium
Each Atlantis abutment is precision machined by a computer controlled milling machine from a solid block of titanium alloy Ti6Al4V. (Two different views of a partially machined abutment)
Step 7: Rigorously Inspect
Each abutment must pass a rigorous inspection prior to being shipped to the customer. The final abutment is fitted to the cast prior to shipment to ensure it meets all requirements.
Step 8: Final Result
The result of the Atlantis VAD process is an abutment that has the shape and contours of the natural tooth it is intended to replace. The ideal abutment every time!
Multiple Unit Case
Multiple unit cases are designed with the same efficiency and accuracy
as single unit cases. The VAD system allows Atlantis to easily create
abutments that are parallel, even for the most challenging cases.
The case shown (below) is of a full maxillary arch. The protocol is exactly the same:
Step 1: Scan both the Master and Diagnostic study casts.
For large complex cases, Atlantis requires the submission of a diagnostic model in addition to the rest of the case materials.
The Abutment Design Technician uses the planned restoration as a guide to design the ideal abutments.
Step 2: Determine the Ideal Shape

VAD software allows Atlantis Abutment Design Technicians to look at the case as a whole and to design the ideal abutments to context that will support the planned final restoration.
Step 3: Design Virtual Abutments
Each abutment has the ideal shape and contour of the natural tooth and is parallel to the rest of the teeth in the arch.
Step 4: Verify the Design

The diagnostic model is superimposed over the virtual abutments to verify the abutment design. Necessary adjustments are made to the abutment designs prior to initiating the machining process.
Every order for Atlantis Abutments is handled with the same care and attention to detail by our experienced Abutment Design Technicians.
